New Statute Helps Guardians Appoint Standby Guardians

New Indiana Code 29-3-3-7 now allows parents of minor children and guardians of incapacitated adults to appoint a “standby guardian” that would immediately become effective in the event of the death or incapacity of the parent or the guardian.   This standby guardian can attend to the needs of the minor child or the adult during the time that it would take to file a guardianship action and have a person appointed to replace the prior parent or guardian.   If you are a parent, or a guardian over an adult, make sure you seriously consider making use of this effective planning tool.  Contact the attorneys at Fine & Hatfield to learn more and to sign a Designation of Standby Guardian form.   Contact Todd Glass at, Beau Dial at or Elissa Shetler at

Dan Gearhart Successfully Chairs Fundraiser for the Reitz Home (June 2011)

Evansville Family Law attorney, Dan Gearhart has served on the Board of the Reitz Home Preservation Society since 2009. This year was his second consecutive year as Chair of the very popular Wine Dive event on June 17th. Up to 200 guests were treated to numerous wine and beer samples offered by Wine Styles of Evansville and Turoni’s Microbrewery. Guests were able to sample the many wines and brews while strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding the Reitz Home. Gearhart also serves as Secretary of the Board, continuing the long term tradition at Fine & Hatfield to have its members volunteer for the Reitz Home Preservation Society. The firm annually is a key sponsor of the Reitz Home’s events, currently co-sponsoring the annual Derby Day fundraiser which raises thousands of dollars for the preservation of the beautiful Reitz Home Museum.

Todd Glass Assumes Presidency of Evansville Bar Association (June 2011).

Evansville attorney Todd Glass assumed a one year term as the President of the 530 member Evansville Bar Association in June of this year. A member of the Board of Directors since 2005, Glass previously served in all officer positions of the EBA Board leading up to the role of President.

The EBA is coming off a tremendously successful Centennial Celebration of its founding in 1911. Glass co-chaired the Centennial History Project for the EBA over the past two years, which culminated in the unveiling of the Vanderburgh County Legal History Center in April. A compilation of the legal history of the Tri-State community, the Legal History Center is located adjacent to the newly renovated Randall T. Shepard Courtroom in the Old Courthouse, and will soon launch its own website as a depository of large amounts of historical data.
